The January 2018 issue of Tabletalk will look at the biblical teaching on the fear of God. When the Lord saved His people from slavery and Egypt and brought them into the Promised Land, He commanded the Israelites to fear Him so that they would find success and permanent residence in Canaan (Deut. 6:10–15). Yet, the history of God’s people shows us that Israel frequently failed to fear God, and so they were sent into exile. Moreover, God’s new covenant people frequently fail to fear Him, and the result has been a history of recurring sin and division. All too often we have become like the unbelieving world where “there is no fear of God before their eyes” (Rom. 3:18). This issue will provide an overview of the biblical teaching on the fear of God, reminding readers why they should fear Him and what the fear of the Lord looks like in our lives.
