The November 2027 issue of Tabletalk will examine the biblical call to mortify sin—the ongoing, Spirit enabled work of putting sin to death in the life of the believer. Though Christians are justified fully and finally in Christ, the presence of indwelling sin remains a daily reality. Scripture therefore commands believers to “put to death what is earthly” (Col. 3:5) and warns that unchecked sin weakens assurance, disrupts communion with God, and dishonors Christ. Few have treated this subject with greater clarity and urgency than John Owen, whose classic work Of the Mortification of Sin continues to instruct the church. Owen reminds us that sin is never passive: “Be killing sin, or it will be killing you.” His insights, rooted deeply in Scripture, provide a framework for understanding both the danger of sin and the grace God supplies for its defeat. This issue of Tabletalk will explore the doctrine and practice of mortification from a Reformed perspective, emphasizing union with Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, the necessity of vigilance, and the hope of final victory. Readers will be equipped not only to understand mortification but to pursue it faithfully in the power of Christ.
